Costume designer Mona May well designed an indelible mark on the films of the ’90s: You’ve noticed her models in “Romy and Michele’s Higher College Reunion,” “Never Been Kissed” and “The Marriage Singer,” but her “Clueless” outfits, particularly the appears designed for Alicia Silverstone’s Cher, are by far the most legendary.
Who can fail to remember Cher’s trade about her gown with the mugger who tells her to get on the ground: “It’s an Alaïa.” Mugger: “An a-whatta?” Cher: “An Alaïa. It’s like a totally crucial designer.”
Below, in honor of the film’s 25th anniversary (it opened July 19, 1995), May well shares some of her most loved appears with The Article: “I took runway garments and transformed them by means of the eye of the large college female,” she states.
Cher’s initially-day-of-college outfit
Amy [Heckerling, the director] cherished a college uniform. So how do you rework it to large manner? This Dolce & Gabbana was a best initially day of college outfit. In the quad, there is a good deal of men and women, a good deal of greenery, how are we heading to pop Cher out? Yellow is like sunshine, like, oh, my God, she’s the sunshine of the college. And when Alicia put it on, that was it, that was the a single.
Cher’s cherry-purple Alaïa
It was so tricky to get nearly anything, simply because no person was lending garments back then! It had to be festive and had to glimpse terrific on Cher. It had to be restricted and binding. It was not in our spending budget to expend a few thousand on a designer gown! We got a phone that we could potentially borrow this, and we totally jumped on it. When it arrived and she tried out it on, it was so best. The coverup boa is a Mona May well unique. I don’t think a lot of men and women realized who Alaïa was before the movie.
Cher’s white Calvin Klein gown
This was a minor out of her color palette, really pale — I wasn’t confident if it would be the suitable issue. You never ever know what will strike the mark. When she put it on, it seriously seemed like lingerie, particularly simply because of the color. Amy was beside herself. And then we found this sheer Vivienne Tam coverup — she was notable in the ’90s.
Dionne (Stacey Sprint)
Dionne was a minor savvier … She was the opposite of Cher, who was type of prim. I like her initially day of college outfit: The black and white, with the vinyl lapels to go with the vinyl hat. She has these kinds of lovely pores and skin. We did the skirts a lot shorter on her, a good deal of vintage purses and clutches, a good deal of texture. I seriously like her Xmas social gathering glimpse, a Dolce & Gabbana blouse. She had the braids in a matching color ribbon and this hot skirt to go with it.
Tai (Brittany Murphy)
Brittany Murphy was these kinds of a delight. When we initially see her character, it’s like, who’s this unpleasant duckling? She had the poor hair and dishevelled garments, and that gave us a good deal to engage in with. In the end, she’s developed, from the grunge by means of the extremely dressed and primped Cher doll, to find she’s this seriously amazing female, quite down to earth … she’s a minor boyish but female, way too.
Christian (Justin Walker), Cher’s crush’s total vibe
Justin totally reminded me of those people previous movie stars, James Dean, any of those people fellas from the ’50s. And, wow, does he glimpse hot in a restricted T-shirt! We needed to carry a little something retro to him, so we did the restricted shirt with the trousers with the pleats, and the pork pie hat. He seriously had the suitable physique and the suitable aura to pull it off.
